Trade and globalization are at a crossroads. For industry, government, and civil society alike, the global economy’s impact on core interests is increasingly large, but equally difficult to shape or manage. The Trade in the 21st Century program (Trade21) combines analysis and stakeholder engagement to help make the global economy work better — for all.

On this website, you’ll find:
- select commentary and analysis from the Trade21 team;
- pointers to what we’re reading or otherwise find interesting;
- occasional contributions from outside experts;
- and more.

We are based at the Stimson Center, a nonpartisan policy research center in Washington, DC, that works to solve the world’s greatest challenges to security and prosperity. Stimson follows the credo of one of history’s leading statesman, Henry L. Stimson, in taking “pragmatic steps toward ideal objectives.” The organization has won particular recognition for its multistakeholder efforts in the area of global trade. Trade21 builds on this record of success, leading Stimson’s work on a new frontier of the global economy.

The Trade21 Team

Nate Olson is Director of Trade21. He leads a number of research and outreach efforts that aim to better align the global economy’s regulatory frameworks, private sector business models, and the public interest agenda. He is a member of several public-private initiatives to address issues spanning trade policy, transnational crime, and private sector compliance and due diligence frameworks. Olson’s current areas of interest include the digital economy, international taxation, the “responsible business conduct” agenda, and medium- and long-term strategies of global firms. He previously served as Director of Government Relations for the Project on National Security Reform.

Bill Reinsch is a Distinguished Fellow with Trade21. From April 2001 to May 2016, Reinsch served as President of the National Foreign Trade Council. From March 2001 to December 2015, he also served as a member of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Reinsch previously served as Under Secretary for Export Administration in the U.S. Department of Commerce, and spent twenty years as a senior legislative assistant to the late Senator John Heinz and subsequently to Senator John D. Rockefeller IV. He is a member of the boards of the Executive Council on Diplomacy and the Center for International Private Enterprise.

Eric Miller is a Nonresident Fellow with Trade21. He is also President of Rideau Potomac Strategy Group, a DC-based advisory group helping firms navigate U.S., Canadian, and international policy and technology challenges. Mr. Miller previously served as Vice President of Policy, North America, and Cybersecurity at the Business Council of Canada, which represents CEOs of 150 of Canada’s leading companies. Before joining the Council, Mr. Miller represented Industry Canada in the United States, advising senior Canadian officials on U.S. economic matters.
